whitepearldentalcare@gmail.comDental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and also provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures. Implants provide excellent support and stability for these dental appliances.
Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth (usually titanium) that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw bone by a dentist. The teeth attached to implants are very natural looking and often enhance or restore a patient’s smile!
Dental implants are strong and durable and will last many years. On occasion, they will have to be re-tightened or replaced due to normal wear.
Implants are one way of replacing missing teeth. A post is planted in the jaw bone to support a replacement tooth. This acts like the root of a natural tooth. Implants can also be used to support fixed bridges or dentures.
Implant treatment normally has two stages. First, the implant is placed in the jaw. Then, when the jaw has healed, replacement teeth are attached to the implant. In some situations it is possible for temporary teeth to be attached to an implant at the time of fitting.
Reasons for dental implants:
First, you should decide whether implants could be right for you. Contact us to arrange an implant consultation and discussion and we will let you know the possibilities. Our team will be only too happy to help you with any questions you may have.
If you decide to go ahead, this is what will happen.
Implants are put into holes in the jaw with a local anesthetic. You can opt to have sedation for this procedure also.
The implant is screwed or pushed in and the gum is stitched so that it heals over the implant under the gum. The bone then grows round the implant to hold it firm. This takes several months.
Implants usually have two sections - the post in the jaw and an extension that is added later when the post is secure. Attaching the extension needs a small cut in the gum above the implant. You might have more than one implant. The replacement teeth might be fixed permanently (like a crown or bridge) or attached in a way which lets you remove them for cleaning (like a denture).
The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months.
X-rays and impressions (moulds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself for up to six months. Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be required in order to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place. With other implants the post and anchor are already attached and placed at the same time.
After several weeks of healing the artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. Because several fittings may be required, this step may take one to two months to complete. After a healing period, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient.
You will receive care instructions when your treatment is completed. Good oral hygiene and eating habits, alongside regular dental visits, will aid in the life of your new implant.
Anybody missing one or more teeth is an ideal candidate for a dental implant procedure. The best part is that implants require no more care than your natural teeth and cannot get cavities.
Single-Tooth Implant
Single-tooth implants are best when one (or multiple) natural teeth have been compromised.
Implant Bridge
Implant bridges are better than traditional dental bridges as they do not compromise the health of natural teeth.
Implant Overdenture
Over dentures snap in and lock into the implants. They can easily be taken off and put back on by patient.
Hybrid Implant Denture
Hybrid dentures can only be removed by your general dentist for regular cleanings. They are otherwise fixed in place.
